Many business owners invest in a good-looking website and then wonder, months later, why it brings no messages or orders. The cause is rarely the design itself. It is usually a few details that visitors notice within the first seconds.
Open your home page on your phone and let someone who does not know you look at it for five seconds. Then ask: what does this site offer? For whom? What should I do now? If they hesitate on any answer, the problem is the message, not the colours.
The seven mistakes
- No clear goal for each pageEvery page should push the visitor toward one action: call, book, request a quote or buy. A page with ten options loses people. Fix: choose the first action for each page and make it visually dominant.
- The site is slowVisitors do not wait. Heavy images, too many plugins and weak hosting slow the page down. Fix: compress images, cut plugins, and test speed on a phone, not only on a computer.
- A poor experience on mobileMost visits now come from phones. Tiny text, buttons too close together or a hard-to-use menu cost you customers. Fix: browse your own site on your phone as if you were a new visitor.
- The message is unclear on the first screenWithin seconds the visitor must understand what you offer and for whom. Fix: a clear headline, one sentence of benefit and a direct button, instead of a generic slogan and a meaningless photo.
- No call to actionVisitors need to know the next step. Fix: buttons such as Book a consultation, Request a quote or Message us on WhatsApp, visible and repeated in more than one place.
- No tracking or measurementWithout numbers you are guessing. Fix: install Google Analytics, track forms, call buttons and WhatsApp, and review the numbers regularly.
- No trust signalsVisitors look for reassurance: past work, customer reviews, a real address and phone number, and a page that introduces the team. Fix: add what you genuinely have, and never invent anything.
A quick checklist to run today
- Is the contact button visible on the first screen without scrolling?
- Does the home page open in under three seconds on a normal connection?
- Can I read all the text and tap every button with one thumb?
- After reading the headline, does a visitor know what you sell and for whom?
- Do I know how many people contacted me this month and where they came from?
- Are there real photos, reviews or projects that prove quality?
Where to start
Do not try to fix everything at once. Pick one mistake from the list and fix it this week, then measure the difference. Small, steady improvements beat a full rebuild without a diagnosis.
Do I need a new website or improvements to the current one?
Start with a diagnosis. If the foundation is sound, improving it is cheaper and faster. If the technical base is old or very slow, rebuilding may save more in the long run.
